assignment

Assignments are a focus—develop each into a finished piece. Incorporate your own goals.  Be creative. Write wildly. Don’t let the assignment get in the way of writing, but don’t disregard it, either. Set it up so this character will surprise, mystify, alarm, or in some way entertain us and reveal some insight into the human condition.

CHARACTER—Develop a character other than yourself in the first person.  Persona.

Poetry

--Throughout the quarter you will focus on form and images.

--For Character assignment, write a persona poem with (at least) 4 lines in iambic cadence.  By next week, you should know how to scan a poem. Please scan the 4 iambic lines either by hand or in your file before making copies and posting.

--Try to write at least 20 lines—it will likely be more.

                --1 poem.

Fiction

--Throughout the quarter you will focus on narration and images.

--For Character assignment, develop one scene that highlights a character not based on

                  yourself.

                --2-5 pages.

Creative Non-Fiction

--Throughout the quarter you will focus on narration and images.

--For your Character assignment, develop a scene: in someone else’s voice, reveal something

true about your own life/subject through that other person’s perspective.  The persona may be              real or fictional, but the subject should be true.

                --2-5 pages

Drama

--Throughout the quarter you will focus on dialogue and action.

--For your character assignment, write a monologue with stage direction.  The monologue          should reveal important information about the character who is speaking.

                --3-6 pages
