ENGL 98 - Ogo: Annotated Bibliography Assignment: Summarize & Evaluate Sources

Summarize and Evaluate

Summarize and evaluate these sources following the instructions given in the example.   Each annotation will have four parts:

  • a citation,
  • a summary,
  • an assessment and
  • a reflection

Sample Annotated Source

The citation: Holland, Suzanne. The Human Embryonic Stem Cell Debate: Science, Ethics, and Public Policy. Boston: MIT Press, 2001. Print.

The first paragraph of the annotation should be a brief summary of the content of the source. For this example this paragraph would be a brief summary of what the above book says about stem cell research. The summary should start with the author’s thesis (main point) in the first sentence.

The second paragraph after the summary is an assessment of this source and some criticisms of it.

  • Does it seem like a reliable and current source? Why?
  • Is the research biased or objective? How do you know?
  • Are the facts well documented? How can you tell?
  • Who is the author? Is she/he qualified in this subject?
  • Is this source scholarly, popular, some of both?

After summarizing and assessing, you can now reflect on this source.

  • Would you recommend this source? \
  • How does it fit into research for this topic?
  • Is this a helpful resource?
  • Too scholarly?
  • Not scholarly enough?
  • Too general/specific?
  • Is there information/graphics that would be useful?
