History: Getting Started

This guide list resources that will get you started on doing historical research. Some sources will be more specific on certain periods and geographical locations.

What makes a good student of history?

The History Department of Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, wrote an outline of "Skills and Goals for Students of History"  in which four basic skills are identified.  They are:

  1. Ability to formulate and answer historical questions on the basis of documentation from the period.
  2. Ability to use secondary sourses to enlarge dossier of sources, perspectives, and questions.
  3. Understanding of concepts of intellectural honesty and proper crediting of others' works.
  4. Familiarity with library resources

This guide will help you develop these skills which in turn will enable you to become information literate in the discipline of history.
