ENGL 91

Craft an Effective Thesis Statement

An essay should have a clear theme or make a clear claim. While narrative essays aren't focused on evidence for claims, the story should still have a point. The thesis statement tells readers what the point is and/or sets the scene for the body of essay. The thesis statement highlights a lesson learned, sets the scene, or identifies a theme. The thesis statement is generally found at the end of the introductory paragraphs and helps readers understand the direction your essay will take. It introduces the story or action that is about to begin.

Adapted from Middlesex Community College

Factors To Consider

Sometimes it can be helpful to consider the following as you craft your thesis statement—

  • Why have you chosen to tell this story?
  • Who is your intended audience?
  • What do you want from your audience?
  • How will your writing present your story to your audience?

Write your thesis statement with these factors in mind so that it sets the tone and give readers the direction or theme of your narrative.
