AI Literacy

Follow Instructor Guidance

Here is our best AI advice for your success in college— unless the use of an AI tool is expressly authorized by your instructor, do not use it.  Without instructor authorization, the use of AI may be considered cheating according to the Student Conduct Code as it is unauthorized assistance.

Many instructors have a statement regarding acceptable and unacceptable uses for AI tools. Read your syllabus and assignment instructions thoroughly so you know and understand exactly what your instructor allows and requires.

Once you have ascertained that you are authorized to use AI-assistance, be sure you understand exactly how and how much AI assistance is permitted. Make note of how your instructor requires you to acknowledge or cite AI-assistance.

If you are allowed to use AI-assistance, ensure you are doing so in the way your instructor authorized. Ask clarifying questions as needed!

Fact Check and Bias Check

Chat GPT and other AI tools will generate misinformation.

When you use AI tools, you need to do so thoughtfully. Remember, you are responsible for errors in your work so be sure to fact check answers you receive. You can use library resources or the open web to verify facts and ideas provided by AI tools. Check out Fact Checking AI page for more info.

Chat GPT and other AI tools will generate biased answers.

Bias is evident in the answers generated by AI. A quick search of library resources or the open web will provide articles discussing or researching this. It is important for users to critically reason through the prompts they craft and the information generated, monitoring for bias. Check our Bias in AI page for more information.
