"Why can't I eat in the library?"

One of the questions we get most often about our library policies is, “Why can’t I eat in here?”

The answer is both simple and upsetting: MICE.

You see, the library is a great big building with plenty of nooks and crannies that is kept at a nice comfortable temperature nearly year-round, making it very attractive for little critters who are looking for a new place to call home. Given that the main thing we store in the library is paper, we are especially vigilant about keeping rodents and other pests out of our space – think of the havoc a handful of mice could bring about if they decided to make beds out of our books!

We have been exploring and experimenting with ways to bring food safely into the library, but so far haven’t found anything mouse-proof. If and when we come up with a solution, we will be sure to let everyone know, but for now, please help us keep the library a welcoming space for our human patrons by eating in the BSC or even outside once the weather gets a little nicer! We would really appreciate it.
