Change "sequence 1 notes" to different notes to start and then change "sequence 2 notes" if you want to make a chord. The sliders change the length of time a note plays for. There is also a percussion background in which you can pick the number of different percussion sounds and the number of percussion notes that play throughout your melody.

Use the radio buttons to decide if you want to practice in a major or a minor key, whether you want to use notes only from the tonality you chose or from all twelve notes of the chromatic scale, and whether you want to hear the scale or a cadence in that key as a reference. Choose the range (in number of octaves) from which you would like the note selected. Click the "new example" button and the scale or cadence will be played, followed by a note selected at random subject to your restrictions. It is up to you to determine the note that was played. If you need to hear the randomly selected note again, click the "repeat note" button. You can check your answer by ear or you can have the answer displayed for you by clicking the "show answer" checkbox. The "fixed tonic C" checkbox lets you always work in C major or to have the tonic selected at random with each new example.

Choose as many or as few chord types as you would like to learn to recognize or distinguish. A chord can then be selected at random from your list and played. It is up to you to determine the quality of that chord. Nine of the most frequently occurring chord types in traditional Western music are included. You can decide whether to restrict the chords to have a fixed root (middle C) or not, and whether to have the chords played only in root position or allow inversions.

This Demonstration uses a common specific definition of a set class as an equivalence class under the relations of both (musical) transposition and inversion. A well-known fact is that there are exactly 29 tetrachords—set classes consisting of four tones. Mathematically, a set class can be viewed as a 12-bead necklace with beads of exactly two colors. This Demonstration allows you to visualize and listen to all set classes consisting of 3, 4, 5, or 6 notes. You can also find and listen to the inverted set class for each of these classes.

Start the scale on any note, then choose the type of scale, speed, and volume. Also, the instrument option includes some peculiar "instruments," like the sound of helicopters.

Each time you press the "new random interval" button, two randomly chosen notes are played, one after the other, and then together. While trying to guess its name, you can replay the interval repeatedly using the "replay" button. After making a guess (or giving up), you can see the correct interval name ("show/hide name").

The data consists of 100 recordings of 21 popular songs of Smyrna in nine-beat rhythms. You can choose various measures. The results are also presented in tables and scatter plots.
