LibGuide Author Style Guide

Preferred practices for LibGuide authors

Usability Tip

Linked items should NOT open in a new page. Page proliferation is annoying to many users, especially mobile users. (Krug: 2014)

Links in text, best limited to internal links

Link syntax

BAD: The anchor text should be descriptive and particular to the link.

BAD: Do not insert URLs into text.

GOOD:  Use descriptive anchor text that is hyperlinked.

External Links

The Link Checker in LibGuides tests asset link but not links in text boxes.

Many of us are accustomed to adding hypertext links to rich text using the link tool in the Rich Text Editor. (Figure 1) Unfortunately, the Link Checker tool does not check these links. As a result, our LibGuides have accumulated hundreds of broken links over the years.

To fix this problem, we need to re-think the way we add links to LibGuides. A good solution is converting in-text links to link assets.

The example below shows an except from a guide with in-text links that are invisible to the Link Checker (Figure 2).

Below this, you see the same content after its redesign.  Links are now visible to the link checker because they have been converted to link assets.
