DMA 137 - Usher - Intermediate Digital Photography: Tools & Materials

This is a digital photography course for those with experience in the basics of photography technique and at least basic experience with adjustable digital cameras. Explore the photographic process as a means of personal and cultural expression.

What you'll need

Required:

  • Regular access to a camera with adjustable settings, preferably a digital SLR camera with RAW capture .   A compact adjustable digital camera is acceptable, but is not the best tool for learning how to control image making. Digital Canon Xti SLR cameras are available through the Library for 1-day loan. 
  • Multi Media ID Card - available through your instructor 
  • Required Text: Complete Digital Photography, 5th ed. 

 

  •    Recommended text Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 Book for Digital Photographers,
  • Optional references are available at the O.C. Bookstore about using the Photoshop Elements program.
  • You will be required to read electronic “handouts” on specific topics under the LINKS section on the right side of my instructor website or emailed to youYou may print these out in SciTech 122; limited printing is available in the classroom.

  • Your camera’s User Manual.  (See weblinks if you need to search for your manual on the web.)

Bring your camera with charged battery, memory card and manual to class every day! 
 
Needed:*

  • Small pocket notebook to use as journal in your camerabag
  • 1-2 media cards 1 to 8 GB for your digital camera
  • 1 flash drive: 1 to 8 GB to transfer your photos from home to school
  • pkg. of 20-25 sheets, laser jet paper (8x10" or 8 ½ x11")
  • 3-ring notebook for assignments, bring to class

Optional:

  • Portable external drive, 120-500 GB
  • Inkjet paper glossy or matte, 10-25 pages.  Wait until you know what size and “feel” you want to convey before purchasing; avail. @ Staples, Office Depot, Glazer’s [you may want to buy photo paper with a classmate and share the package]

The instructor may communicate via email, so it is suggested that you check your email the evening prior to class.*

You may be asked to submit some assignments via email.
